ICAN to Participate in SmartBay
March 24, 2006
ICAN is pleased to announce its participation in the development of
SmartBay; an upcoming pilot project for Placentia Bay, Newfoundland and
Labrador, Canada. Foreign Affairs and ACOA Minister Peter MacKay and
Fisheries Minister Loyola Hearn announced on Monday that the government of
Canada is providing $2 million in ACOA funding for the project, which will
be lead by the Canadian Centre for Marine Communications (CCMC).
The objective of SmartBay is to showcase Canadian capability through the
integration and application of existing technologies in five key areas: oil
and gas, vessel efficiencies, search and rescue, aquaculture, and fisheries.
SmartBay will provide a better understanding of the marine environment and
the requirements for its sustainable development.
ICAN was chosen as one of the key players in the project based upon its
experience with both shore-based and vessel-based marine communications.
ICAN will be providing display and data-management software to integrate and
organize the vast amount of data used in the project.
ICAN has established itself as a successful exporter of marine
communications solutions, and President Neil Chaulk is pleased to see a
project of this magnitude happening locally, “We’re thrilled that this type
of development is happening here in Newfoundland and Labrador,” he said
after the press conference on Monday, “SmartBay will provide a wonderful
location for local companies conducting demonstrations for potential
customers and technology development projects.”
